Public hearing on future of internal market

Brussels, 27/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Charlie McCreevy announced on Thursday 26 October that a public hearing would be organised end November in Brussels on the Community's future single market policy during a speech at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). The internal market Commissioner said that a public hearing in Brussels on 29 November would allow them to measure how they feel about the way their policies are moving forward. He said his colleagues at the Commission are examining their portfolios and that, together, the Commission will present a first viewpoint on the future direction to be taken at the European Council in 2007.

The hearing will cover the following: - the way to capture the attention of the parties interested by the single market, the “ingredients” for a successful modern policy, implementation of the law and dispute settlement, and the tools allowing communication on the internal market.

Meeting at a seminar mid-September, the Commission had enhanced its approach based on a “Europe of results” by placing internal market policy at the top of its list of priorities (see EUROPE 9269). It had above all restated its determination to ensure the free movement of goods, capital, services and workers (the four freedoms of the European treaty) and identify the areas where completion of the internal market is necessary: energy, transport, telecommunications, financial services, intellectual property and health. It will present a report and a plan of action during the first half of 2007, including a first version to be submitted to the next Spring European Council.
