Brussels, 16/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 12 October, the European Commission issued formal notifications to Greece and Cyprus calling on them to implement measures for the use of digital tachographs in road transport operations. The digital tachograph has been compulsory for all new heavy goods vehicles and buses within the EU since 1 May 2006, in line with Regulation 561/2006 on the harmonisation of part of social legislation in the field of road transport. It is up to Member States to issue the necessary tachograph cards to drivers, companies, workshops and control officers. To date, all Member States except Greece and Cyprus have put in place the necessary arrangements. The authorities in these two countries have two months in which to explain the reasons for this delay to the Commission. (dt)
