13/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, Commissioner Olli Rehn welcomed the fact that the Nobel Prize for Literature had been awarded to Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. In a press release, Rehn says the prize is good news for artistic freedom and freedom of expression in particular. Mr Pamuk had been prosecuted by the Turkish justice system for “insulting the Turkish nation” with his declarations on the Armenian genocide, but charges were finally dropped early this year. (hb)
