Parliament supports fight against breast cancer

Brussels, 05/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - For the second consecutive year, the European Parliament pledges to heighten awareness and promote respect of quality screening standards according to European guidelines. A workshop on the professional training of specialised nurses will be held on Thursday 17 October, during the month dedicated at international level to heightening awareness on this illness. On 24 October, the Parliament will examine a new resolution on breast cancer bearing in mind the situation of the new Member States. The resolution will follow three oral questions raised at the initiative of German Social Democrat Karin Jöns, and will cover the strengthening of research activities on breast cancer, the reintegration of cancer patients onto the labour market and the development of European directives to promote the image of specialised nurses. Cancer is the cause of the largest number of deaths in Europe and breast cancer is the most widespread cancer after lung cancer. Within the European Union, 88,400 women and nearly 1,000 men die each year from breast cancer. Thirty-five percent of the 275,000 cases diagnosed concern women aged under 55. (oj)
