Protection for marine resources in South East Atlantic

Brussels, 05/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 5 October, Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg welcomed the outcome of the annual meeting of the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO), held in Windhoek, Namibia. The signatories (European Community, Namibia, Angola and Norway) decided to ban fishing in 10 zones with seamounts (similar to coral reefs) from 2007 until 2010. SEAFO also decided to require all vessels to: - adjust fishing gear to reduce incidental mortality of seabirds, especially petrels and albatrosses; - release sea turtles caught in fishing gear; - regulate shark fishing. In addition, they agreed to ban transhipments at sea (transferring catches from one vessel to another), to blacklist vessels which undertake illegal fishing and enhance control and monitoring (record of vessels, on-board observers, satellite monitoring of activities and catch reporting requirements).
