Brussels, 05/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 5 October, the European Commission adopted new measures to reinforce airline security in the wake of the attempted attack thwarted in London last August. On 27 September, experts on airline security from EU Member States met up at the EU's airline security regulatory committee and submitted a positive opinion on the measures proposed by the Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot. These measures will enter into force twenty days after their publication in the Official Journal, at the beginning of November. From this date onwards, the quantity of liquid authorised by passengers will be limited to 100 ml per container transported in a transparent plastic bag that has a maximum capacity of one litre and which has to be presented to security controls. Exemptions will, however, be possible for medical reasons or baby food. Passengers will also have the possibility of buying liquid in airport shops beyond boarding card control points. After a six month transition period, the size of luggage allowed on board will be limited to 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 x cm (with the possibility of exemptions), for example, musical instruments). Passengers will have to remove their jackets and coats at controls, as well as large scale electronic devices contained in their bags. These measures will apply to all flights leaving EU airports, wherever they are flying to and whatever the nationality of the airline. Commissioner Barrot was pleased to inform the press that “these measures will be recognised by the US”, which considers them as being “sufficient”. (dt)
