Brussels, 04/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Pyongyang's announcement on 3 October that it intends to conduct a nuclear test to strengthen its nuclear arsenal has caused considerable protest and concern within the international community. The Finnish EU Presidency reacted on Tuesday afternoon on behalf of the European Union, expressing its “deep concern”. “This announcement is an irresponsible and escalatory step. It increases tension and undermines regional stability. The way ahead is through dialogue, not threats and confrontation”, the Finnish President said, inviting North Korea to return to the Six Party Talks immediately (North Korea, South Korea, United States, Japan and Russia). The UN Security Council was scheduled to examine this matter on Wednesday afternoon. (eh)
