Commission could adopt energy efficiency action plan in week of 18 October

Brussels, 04/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to a Community source close to the matter, the Commission could adopt the energy efficiency action plan in the week beginning 18 October. The same source said that, inter-service consultations have been completed, the Commission could officially decide on the date for the much-awaited action plan “very soon”. The now “well advanced” document will send a “strong political message”: energy efficiency is one of the Commission's priorities in the area of energy and the aim of 20% energy savings by 2020is definitely not, and never has been, in question”. If adopted before the end of October, the energy efficiency action plan could be debated by the Energy Council at its meeting on 23 November. Indicating that it saw “no reason to push adoption of the action plan back to January”, the Finnish Presidency, which made energy one of its priority areas, expressed its annoyance this week at the delay built up by the Commission. Energy is also one of the main topics of the Lahti informal summit, which, at the invitation of the Finnish Presidency, will bring together EU heads of state and government on 20 October. (mb)
