Brussels, 04/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - After the National Assembly, on 3 October, the French Senate adopted the draft ratification of the Accession Treaty for Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union. The bill, consisting of a single article authorising France's ratification, had already been approved by MPs in June. Last week, the European Commission presented progress reports favourable to the accession of the two countries on 1st January 2007 (see EUROPE 9273). The Communist group in the Senate boycotted the vote, because the two new arrivals were about to join a system that would bring them only disillusionment, explained Robert Bret, deputy leader of the group. Only Germany, Belgium and Denmark have still to ratify the accession treaty so that Bulgaria and Romania can join the EU in 2007. (ol)
