Conference on simplifying CAP rules

Brussels, 02/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will bring together experts from all over Europe for a conference on simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Brussels on 3-4 October. Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel and Günther Verheugen, the Industry Commissioner, will take part in the debate, the results of which will feed into the Commission's ongoing efforts to reduce the bureaucratic burden on farmers and national administrations. In December, the Commission is due to present a proposal on putting in place a common organisation of the single market (COM), to replace the twenty one COM which currently govern the various sectors. The CAP “health check”, scheduled for 2008, could lead to important decisions, notably on decoupling aid (breaking the link between the level of aid and volume of production). The Commission points out that reforms agreed since 2003 are already channelling around 90% of direct payments to farmers.
