THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/caucasus

02/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU ministerial troika, led by Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja and Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is currently visiting Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia (2-3 October) for talks with the highest representatives of the three countries. Among the topics for discussion are the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), frozen conflicts, energy security and the main international politics issues. The troika also contains a representative from the German foreign ministry (forthcoming EU Presidency), and Javier Solana's representative. Over the last few months, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan have begun consultations with the European Commission on drawing up action plans for the implementation of the ENP. These action plans must seek to promote the progressive integration of these countries, in particular by offering them the opportunity to participate in the EU internal market. The troika visit will be followed by cooperation committee and cooperation council meetings with the three South Caucasian countries ahead of the formal adoption of the actions plans in November.
