29/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - Opening the MEDEF (Mouvement des enterprises de France) summer university in the Paris region on 29 August alongside MEDEF President Laurence Parisot, President Barroso warned against the dangerous hotchpotch of ideas that “leads people to confuse in one and the same movement both rejection of globalisation and Europe”. He noted that France is a major player in globalisation (“its international trade in goods and services today make up 26% of its GDP, far greater than the 13% of the United States”). Europe is the “area of conciliation par excellence when it comes to globalisation”, he said, stressing the need to bring “four dimensions” together by reconciling flexibility and security, competitiveness and economic and social cohesion, the national and international dimensions (mainly through the “capital relay role played by the national parliaments and civil society”) and diversity and unity. Mr Barroso, moreover, urged once more for EU enlargement, which he believes is a condition for a “powerful Europe” compared to the “miniature Europe” with which some are content to remain.
