Brussels, 02/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - The BBC has indicated that the Spanish foreign affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos held meetings on Wednesday in Beirut with the president of the Lebanese parliament and a working lunch with prime minister Siniora and his whole government, including members of Hezbollah. On Thursday, the former Special Representative of the EU to the Middle East is expected in Damascus.
Mr Moratinos failed to say whether he was a messenger for the EU but according to the BBC declared, “The aim I want to convey to the Syrian authorities: for them to play a constructive role to help resolve this crisis, which may affect the stability of the whole Middle East. And it is a visit which, like all visits - as we, the different EU ministers agreed yesterday - are coordinated, arranged with the presidency (Finnish) and with the High Representative for foreign policy, Javier Solana (for the Extraordinary Council of the EU on 1 August in Lebanon, EUROPE 9244).
