30/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 27June, the Council adopted a joint action on a new EU contribution to the conflict settlement process in South Ossetia. This comes as a follow-up to the action adopted in June 2005 aimed at providing a financial contribution to the OSCE to allow it to have an operational secretariat and to hold meetings of the joint control committee, the main body in the conflict settlement process between this breakaway region and Georgia. The EU's contribution (joint action provides for a reference amount of €140,000) aims to make up for the financial difficulties encountered by OSCE due to Russian opposition. The text of the joint action, which applies from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007, has been published in the Official Journal L174 of 28 June.
