Brussels, 30/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The decision of the United States Supreme Court to invalidate the exceptional courts set up by President Bush to judge prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay are a new major step, the European Commission said on Friday. “This is an incredibly important judgement that is in line with what everyone thinks”, Friso Roscam Abbing, Spokesman for Commissioner Frattini, said. “We have to put an end to this situation”, he stressed, adding that the time had come to set an appropriate legal process in place to try detainees. In an unequivocal verdict, the highest legal body of the United States said on 29 June that the military courts established by President Bush are illegal and violate not only US martial law but also the Geneva Convention on war prisoners. Technically speaking, this verdict does not mean Guantanamo will be closed, as the European Union requests (EUROPE 9210).
