Presidency successful, says Ursula Plassnik

Brussels, 26/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Before handing over to Finland, the Austrian Minister for foreign affairs, Ursula Plassnik, spoke of the positive results of the six months her country spent as President of the Council of the EU. At a press conference on Monday, Ms Plassnik, quoted by the press agency AFP, described the Austrian Presidency as "a success", stressing its "commitment", "competence" and "pragmatism" in its handling of many dossiers, including the energy dossier, but also the Constitutional Treaty. "For the first time, the States of the EU have held an in-depth discussion on this subject and no Presidency will be able to ignore this dossier in future", put in Wolfgang Schüssel, on EU management in the field of energy. It is worth noting that agreements on the liberalisation of services and on the financial perspectives 2007-2013 were achieved by Austria. Chancellor Schüssel believes that his country has shown a spirit of "concertation" and "partnership". "Of course, we did not have overnight success" with the subjects of enlargement and the Constitutional Treaty, Ursula Plassnik acknowledged, going on to state her view that Austria had done "the ground work, which will allow progress to be made step-by-step". As of 1 July, it will be Finland's turn to hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU, the rest of the year 2006.
