Brussels, 13/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Following the suicides last week of three detainees (two Saudis and a Yemeni), the Austrian Presidency and the European Commission have reiterated their call for the closure of the American detention camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Speaking to press in Luxemburg on Monday evening after the “General Affairs/External Relations” Council, Council President Ursula Plassnik said the camp was an “anomaly” which should be removed as quickly as possible. “We continue to insist that, in our opinion, the American government should close Guantanamo as quickly as possible. For a country like the United States, committed to freedom, the rule of law and justice, this is an anomaly,” she said. Ms Plassnik said the issue would be raised by the EU at the Summit with the United States in Vienna on 21 June. Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner fully shared the Presidency's point of view. “Guantanamo should be shut,” she said.
