EP officially calls for closure of Guantanamo

Strasbourg, 13/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, after having deferred its vote on 1 June (EUROPE 9203), the European Parliament overwhelmingly adopted a resolution reiterating its call on the US Administration to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and for “every prisoner to be treated in accordance with international humanitarian law”. The new resolution thus describes as “extremely worrying” the reports of torture inflicted on prisoners held by the Americans, as well as the recent mutiny in the prison of Guantanamo Bay. MEPs note that the suicide of three prisoners, on 10 June, has heightened the concern felt by the international community regarding detention conditions there. The EU and the Member States are invited to adopt a “common approach for the EU-US Summit (21 June) and to institute a joint action calling on the US Government to close the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and act in accordance with international law regarding the treatment of detainees”.
