13/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The final version of the draft conclusions prepared for the European Council, contain a paragraph on relations between the European Union and the Council of Europe and on the report elaborated on this subject in a personal capacity by Jean-Claude Juncker. During the Luxembourg prime minister's presentation of the report on 10 April in Strasbourg, Wolfgang Schüssel made a commitment to make a reference to the report in the European Council conclusions. According to the draft of the 7 June text, the European Council “attaches great importance to a fruitful cooperation between the EU and the Council of Europe and encourages them to overcome the difficulties that persist in the ongoing negotiations on the memorandum of understanding”. The European Council will also express its “recognition of prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker's report on future relations between the Council of Europe and the EU, which deserves a detailed examination”.
