Council agreement on joint undertaking SESAR

Brussels, 12/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - In Luxemburg on 9 June, the Transport Council reached a general approach on a proposal for a regulation on the establishment of a joint undertaking to develop SESAR, the new generation European air traffic management control system (see EUROPE 9071). The programme is composed of three phases. Firstly, the definition phase, launched in 2005, to draw up the project road map within two years. Then, the development phase (2008-2013), which consists of developing the basic technologies in line with the road map. This is the phase the joint undertaking SESAR, which will be created on the model of the public-private partnership between the EU, Eurocontrol and the industry, and could involve partner countries, will be involved with. The cost of the second phase, estimated at 300 million euro per year, will also be shared equally between the Commission, Eurocontrol and the industry. Finally, will come the deployment phase (2014-2020), which will largely be the responsibility of the private sector, for both implementation and funding. In its general approach, the Council slightly amended the committee procedure to ensure greater responsibility for Member States within the SESAR joint undertaking.
