Council calls on Commission to take necessary measures, including legislative, to improve road safety

Brussels, 12/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - In Luxemburg on 9 June, the Transport Council adopted conclusions on road safety calling on the European Commission to take “the necessary actions, including, where appropriate, legislative proposals” to improve road safety within the EU, by identifying different areas such as vulnerable road users, the safety of road infrastructure, cross-border enforcement of offences, with a particular focus on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and speeding. The Council also insisted on the need to give particular attention to new initiatives on vehicle safety, as set out in the “CARS21” report (such as electronic stability control, seatbelt reminders, brake assistant systems, rear view vision and conspicuity, and daytime running lights), to organise a European awareness-raising campaign to combat accident risks, to commit non-governmental stakeholders to additional road safety measures, through the European Road Safety Charter, and to raise awareness among road users of possible risks, through the Commission's initiative for a road safety day.
