Brussels/Geneva, 12/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is "deeply concerned about the growing needs and worsening security situation in the occupied territories”, is calling on all concerned parties to “do their utmost to prevent a crisis which would aggravate the hardship of the Palestinian population ". This appeal was launched on Monday, whilst the Council of the EU was trying to reach agreement on the form to be taken by the “temporary aid mechanism” for the Palestinians decided upon by the Quartet (EUROPE 9208). It is "of utmost importance" that the international community make “concerted efforts to prevent this crisis from turning into a major humanitarian emergency situation”, said Balthasar Staehelin, delegate general of the ICRC for the Middle East and North Africa. For its part, the ICRC has decided to step up its budget for activities in the Palestinian territories and Israel by some 25% for 2006, to bring the total sum to 52 million Swiss francs, according to a press release. The ICRC will finance the purchase of medical equipment and cover the salaries and running costs in order to help the Palestinian Red Cross to manage four hospitals, 30 first aid centres and ambulance services.
