12/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEPs Angelika Beer and Caroline Lucas (Green, Germany and United Kingdom) have welcomed the International Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction's report Weapons of Terror by former head of the UN Arms Control Commission in Iraq, Hans Blix. The report clearly demonstrates “the extent of the deadly post-Cold War arms race. With 27,000 currently existing nuclear weapons and other states and possibly terrorist groups bent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction, the threat to global security is enormous,” they say. The report points out that “recognised” nuclear states do not live up to their commitments, say the MEPs, who announce that the Greens have presented a written declaration , which will be open for signature in the European parliament from 12 June calling on the United States to remove the 480 nuclear warheads it still has in Europe.
