Summit should consider single seat for Parliament, Malmström says

Brussels, 09/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEP Cecilia Malmström (Liberal, Sweden) says in a press release that, after four weeks of campaigning for a single seat for the EP, in Brussels, her internet campaign has already attracted 500,000 signatures. “This is something prime ministers should think about when they meet up next week to evaluate the so called reflection period”, adding that “we have received support from Commissioner Wallström who supports the initiative and thinks the parliament should be able to decide its own seat”. Speaking about the request from the mayor of Strasbourg Fabienne Keller that, at the Summit, President Chirac should propose that some of the European Parliament's administration be permanently based in the Alsatian capital to defend “French interests” (see EUROPE 9206), Ms Malmström says, “For us, this is not an issue of French interests but of European interest. The symbolic value of Strasbourg for European integration is unquestioned; but the European interest does not lie with keeping the European Parliament a travelling circus”.
