Brussels, 09/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Reacting to the seizure of control of Mogadishu by the militias of Somali Islamic Courts, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Louis Michel, European Development Commissioner, have called on all Somalis to work together for peace and stability in Mogadishu and the rest of the country. In a joint press release, they state EU support for the constructive statement by the Transitional Federal Institutions for launching dialogue in Mogadishu with the Islamic Courts, civil society, the business communities and other stakeholders. Noting the statement of the Chairman of the Islamic Courts to the international community, Messrs Solana and Michel urge the Islamic Courts to engage in constructive dialogue within the framework of the Transitional Federal Institutions. They reiterate their unwavering commitment in supporting the Transitional Federal Institutions as the only framework for governance in Somalia, and call on the international community to stand ready to provide assistance within that framework.
