09/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has authorised the implementation by Latvia of measures to finance broadband communications in regions where this type of service is not available. The measure consists in direct subsidies for investments in broadband infrastructures in rural and remote areas, which are not served by broadband providers. This scheme is in accordance with the state aid provisions of the Treaty (article 87, paragraph 3, point c), which authorise subsidies designed to facilitate the development of certain activities or certain economic areas, as long as they do not have an negative effect on competition in the view of the Commission.
