68% of Poles think EU needs Constitution

Brussels, 09/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to an opinion poll carried out by IPA (Institute of Public Affairs) between 6 and 10 April for the European Union Department of the Polish Foreign Ministry, 68% of respondents believe that the EU needs a constitution, and only 13% believe that, following the French and Dutch “No” votes, the project should be abandoned. For 59% of respondents, the current Constitutional Treaty was necessary to make the EU more efficient. 51% support common armed forces, and 52% are for a European foreign minister. The current Polish situation is “paradoxical”, say those who carried out the poll, since, according to one opinion poll from April, 80% of Poles support European integration, yet “the same Poles have elected the most Euro-sceptical parliament in post-1989 history”.
