08/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Olli Rehn (enlargement) met the Romanian Prime Minister, Bela Marko, in Brussels on Thursday to take stock of the country's preparations for EU membership. Mr Rehn welcomed the fact that the Romanian government had adopted an emergency action plan to meet the deficits identified by the Commission in its progress report of 16 May, but also stressed the need for all institutional players in Romania - government, parliament, judiciary, etc. - to ensure complete implementation on the ground during the last few months remaining until publication of the last Commission report, this October. Mr Rehn was also adamant about respecting the rights of the Hungarian minority living in Romania.
