08/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The leader of the ALDE Group at the European Parliament, Graham Watson, deplored the European Commission's “passive” attitude with regard to the European Constitution. “The Commission should be fighting more”, Mr Watson said on Wednesday, speaking to a small group of journalists. “We have a constitutional treaty that all Member States have pledged to implement. As the guardian of the treaties, the Commission has the duty to go and fight for the text”, he said. We recall that, in its recent communication on the future of Europe intended for the European Council, the Commission notes that, for now, Member States have not reached a consensus for overcoming this constitutional crisis and that the EU must therefore focus on a “Europe of results” (EUROPE 9189).
