PES presents petition to Mr Frattini

Brussels, 08/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the football World Cup in Germany, the Party of European Socialists (PES), led by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and 3F, one of Denmark's biggest trade unions, have presented petitions to European Justice and Hole Affairs Commissioner Franco Frattini calling for action on the forced prostitution which is feared at the sporting event. The PES petition has over 23,000 signatures, and 3F's around 70,000, according to a PES press release, which says that the petitions were handed over to Mr Frattini by MEPs Zita Gurmai (Hungarian President of PES Women), Britta Thomsen (Denmark) and Marianne Mikko (Estonia), and by 3F Vice-President Jane Korczak. Ms Gurmai said she would ask Mr Frattini to report back after the World Cup with an assessment of the scale of the problem and of the actions taken. She went on, “Beyond the World Cup there is need for a real debate across Europe on tackling the root causes of trafficking for sexual exploitation”, a form of human trafficking that has become “one of the world's most profitable crimes”.
