Brussels, 03/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the JHA Council on 28 April, EU Interior Ministers abandoned a 2005 draft framework decision to facilitate police enquiries up to 50 kilometres beyond the border of another Member State and strengthen cooperation between police forces in border areas (see EUROPE 8994). A diplomatic source told EUROPE that the Commission's original version had been so watered down that Ministers decided to abandon it and wait for a new version. In addition to the information already given on the outcome of the JHA Council (see EUROPE 9181, 9182 and 9183) the following events have taken place: - Peter Sutherland, UN Special Representative on migration, has given details of a UN high-level dialogue scheduled for 14-15 September; - the Presidency has opened “N-Lex”, an online database of Member States' national legislation; - Franco Frattini has called on Ministers to cooperate fully with the EP investigation into alleged anti-terrorism activities by the CIA in Europe (see above); - the Council has adopted a decision allowing the EU to promote cooperation between the police and customs, such as the rules for the selection of the head of the European Police College.
