Brussels, 03/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Having heard a detailed report by the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Carla del Ponte, Commissioner Olli Rehn announced to the press the suspension of negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA). The next negotiation meeting was scheduled for 11 May. "Carla del Ponte's assessment (on Belgrade's cooperation with ICTY) is negative. It is disappointing that Belgrade has been unable to find and arrest Radko Mladic and send him to The Hague. For this reason, the Commission has had to suspend its negotiations", said Mr Rehn. The Commission explained that "one of the key reasons" for the fact that Mladic has not been arrested lies in the fact that the secret services and military intelligence are "not fully under the civil democratic control of the Serbian government".
