Death of Roy Denman

Brussels, 24/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - Roy Denman has died at the age of 81. Having been a member of the British Kennedy Round negotiating team at GATT in the middle of the 1960s, Mr Denman was a member of the high level group which prepared the UK's accession to the European Community in 1973. In 1977, he became Director General for External Relations at the European Commission under the Presidency of Roy Jenkins, before becoming Commission Representative in Washington from 1982 to 1989. Known for his frankness and his commitment to the European ideal, he continued to follow European affairs with a sparkling and critical eye until the end of his life.
