Strasbourg, 10/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on 6 April, the EP calls for the release of Ayman Nour, the leader of the Egyptian opposition party, Al Ghad, who is condemned to five years in prison for “having falsified some of the fifty signatures necessary for registration of his party” at the 2005 elections. The Parliament, which notes that the EU/Egypt action plan in the context of the EU Neighbourhood Policy must be adopted in principle in June, invites the Commission and the Egyptian government to include in this plan the creation of a sub-commission on human rights and measures on the freedom of education, the media and religion. Although this could entail having to extend negotiations beyond 12 June as foreseen for the Association Council, the action plan should include sensitive problems, the EP states, such as the lifting of the state of emergency, prevention and fight against torture, the abolition of arbitrary detention and the strengthening of judiciary independence. The EP, which welcomes the political reform process that the European authorities have undertaken to pursue, also invites the government to reform the legal framework governing elections on the basis of international standards.
