10/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European People's Party and European Democrats group (EPP-ED) has adopted the top level domain “.eu” for its internet site and thus becomes the first political group to use this specifically European internet address (http: //http://www.epp-ed.eu ). Austrian MEP Paul Rübig welcomed this initiative: “It is important to spread the use of this top level domain as quickly as possible, not only to give the European Union more visibility on the net, but also to increase legal security and consistency”. In use since the 7 December 2005, the “.eu” was limited, in its first phase, to brand names and public bodies. It has been open to the public since 7 April.
