Germany faces first case of avian flu on poultry farm and recurrence of swine fever

Brussels, 05/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The German authorities confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian flu virus on 5 April on a poultry farm in Bernsdorf, near Leipzig in Saxony. The farm has 8000 turkeys, 5000 geese and 3300 chickens. Samples have been sent to the Community Reference Laboratory in Weybridge for confirmation of whether it is the Asian strain of the virus.
