Louis Michel proposes strategy for peace and development

Brussels, 20/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the 11th summit of IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority for Development) of Heads of State and Government in Nairobi on 20 March, Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid proposed a strategy for peace, security and development in the seven countries affected: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. A press release explained that the strategy builds on the actions taken by the IGAD and the Nile Basin Initiative and focuses on peace and security, the establishment of the Eastern African Standby military brigade (EASBRIG), non-proliferation of small arms, border control, food security and the fight against desertification. The Commissioner explained to his counterparts that, “the history of the EU can be a source of inspiration for the region” and that their “regional political forum, IGAD, has become a central part of the political and security architecture of the Horn of Africa. It needs to be utilised to its full potential. But this requires genuine political will and commitment.”
