Spring Day in Europe” urges youngsters to debate their future

Brussels, 20/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - For the fourth consecutive year, European Schoolnet is together with the European Commission organising the “Spring Day in Europe” event for raising the awareness of young people about Europe. Between 21 March and 9 May 2006 activities will be simultaneously organised in schools in Member States, accession countries and countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Ukraine on the theme of “Debating our Future”. Spring Day in Europe will offer pupils aged between 7 and 17 a unique opportunity to talk about and raise the awareness of European citizens on how young people and the European institutions can unite their forces for better dialogue and understanding of democratic developments in Europe. National and European figures will be visiting schools and participating in on-line discussions. Activities in schools will also include role plays on the decision-making process and discussions about European values. There have been three previous editions of “Spring day in Europe” which dealt with the Treaty of the Convention for drafting the European Constitution (2003), enlargement (2004) and the Constitution (2005). Jan Figel European Commissioner for Youth Affairs said that youth access to more information on Europe and its participation in debates on the future of Europe are essential for training and citizenship.
