Brussels, 20/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The 11th EU/Japan Symposium meeting in Brussels on 20 and 21 March, attended by Social Affairs and Employment Commissioner Vladimir Spidla and Japan's Vice Minister for Health, Labour and Welfare, Toshikazu Togari, as well as the social partners concerned, allowed participants to discuss the consequences that globalisation would have on employment and on worker employability. On this occasion, Mr Spidla stressed the importance of “flexicurity” “designed to promote greater flexibility for employers, while guaranteeing security for workers”. To meet the challenge of globalisation, workers must be better qualified through life-long learning. It is also necessary to ensure that they are proposed quality jobs, Mr Spidla said, recalling that, in order to help workers who are the victims of restructuring, the Commission has suggested creating a European Globalisation Adjustment Fund of EUR 500 million. Mr Togari explained the efforts that Japan is making to encourage worker mobility.
