Divergences on defining vodka

Brussels, 21/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council on 20 February, Poland, supported by Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia called on the European Commission to change its definition in its proposal made at the end of 2005 on the presentation and labelling of spirits, on vodka. To preserve the traditional character of the product, these countries are calling for limits to primary materials used in the production of vodka to cereals and potatoes. The broader definition proposed by the Commission would in effect, according to these countries, mislead consumers and lead to organoleptically different products. In the opposing camp, the United Kingdom (one of whose factories uses the grape brand to manufacture vodka), Ireland and the Netherlands supported the Commission proposal because they believe a restriction on the list of products used contravenes WTO rules. Poland and the north and eastern countries produce around 85% of total EU vodka production. Member State experts are continuing to examine the Commission proposal at a technical level.
