21/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - Radical Italian MEP Emma Bonino attended the opening session, in Bamako on 21 February, of the sub-regional conference on genital mutilation on women and the implementation of the Moputo protocol, organised by the government of Mali and the international organisation “No peace without Justice”. A press release states that this protocol, “a first 'Charter of Rights' for African women entered into force on 29 November 2005 following the 25 ratifications required” clearly forbids, in Article 5, genital mutilation on women, considering that they represent a violation of fundamental human rights.
