EU celebrates first anniversary of Kyoto Protocol, eyes riveted on additional measures to be taken and international regime to be negotiated for post-2012

Brussels, 15/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Kyoto Protocol on climate change, which came into effect on 16 February 2005, will celebrate its first anniversary on Thursday. For the EU, which fought tooth and nail for this innovative international instrument, decried by the United States, requiring for the first time industrialised nations to bring about a 5.2% reduction in 1990 levels of greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2012, this is a red letter day.
