GUE/NGL worried about Assembly resolution putting Communism and Nazism on same footing

Brussels, 25/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - Leader of the Confederal Group of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left Francis Wurtz has, in a document co-signed by the members of the group, expressed his serious concern over the draft resolution on which the Assembly of the Council of Europe was due to vote on Wednesday. The initiative aligned Communist regimes with Nazism (the report by Göran Lindblad (EPP-ED, Sweden) notes “analogies” between Communism and Nazism). This initiative was leading to rendering banal Nazi genocide and to offending the memory of the many Communist resistance fighters and victims of Nazism, wrote Mr Wurtz, going on, “One thing is to condemn Stalinist crimes outright - that goes without saying; another thing would be to let oneself be caught up in a rewriting of history”. Fifty years after the death of McCarthy, he lamented, the rapporteur of the Assembly of the Council of Europe is attempting to re-launch a European-style McCarthyism, legitimising in advance threats of bans, like those currently hanging over the “Czech communist youth”.
