Brussels, 10/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on 6 January, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) predicts an increase of 1.77% in road transport for 2006 in OECD countries. In 2005, the volume of road freight rose by 1.7% compared with 2004, while registrations of new commercial vehicles of over 3.5 tonnes increased by 1.9%. Jens Hügel, head of the Sustainable Development Section of the IRU, said that to respond to this increase with cleaner vehicles, governments must, without delay, introduce adequate incentives to accelerate the acquisition of the cleanest and safest vehicles on the market and particularly Euro 5 vehicles, to maximise the environmental benefit for all.
