BEUC reiterates consumer rights in digital environment

Brussels, 29/11/2005 (Agence Europe) -The European Consumers' Organisation (BEUC) has expressed concern at the attitude of the Directorate General "Information Society" of the European Commission in debates carried out by the " European Film Online Exercise", a group which was invited by the DG to discuss a new approach to online content. This group, which was known as the Sherpa" group, was made up solely of representatives of the audiovisual industry, and excluded public interest groups, BEUC points out. It goes on to suggest that this group should discuss a charter of "best practice" aiming to promote online content and fight unauthorised filesharing, and look into the establishment of a gradual response system, starting off with sending warnings as the first measure, to ending up blocking the Internet connections of clients repeatedly practising unauthorised filesharing. "The questions currently being dealt with by this group are of the greatest importance for consumer protection in the digital environment, both from the point of view of their economic interest and in terms of their right to privacy", emphasises BEUC, which fears that public interest and consumer protection have not been sufficiently taken into account. BEUC voiced its concern in a letter to Commissioner Viviane Reding. It recently launched a campaign on the Digital rights of consumers, tackling these aspects of online digital content (see EUROPE 9071).
