Prime Minister Berisha meets Solana and Barroso

Brussels, 29/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, in Brussels, Albania's Prime Minister Sali Berisha was received by the EU's High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso.

During their meeting, Solana urged Berisha to “actively continue to seek a constructive working atmosphere across party lines”, a Council press release states, recalling that, according to the last Regular Report from the European Commission, Albania has made sufficient progress to recommend the conclusion of negotiations for a Stabilisation and Association Agreement. In view of the eventual signature and the subsequent ratification of the agreement, the Albanian government needed to ensure continued progress on reforms, the press release goes on to read. It also notes that, encouraged by the Albanian government's commitment to fighting corruption and organised crime, Mr Solana underlined the importance of translating this commitment into strong and sustained action.

The press release notes that Messrs Solana and Berisha also spoke of the Kosovo Status Process and that the High Representative encouraged the prime minister to “continue Albania's moderating role in the region and to fully support the work of the UN Status Envoy”.
