Javier Solana's vision

Brussels, 14/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on regional issues at the Forum for the Future in Manama (Bahrain) on 11 November, EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, said 'BMENA (broader Middle East and North Africa) was born of the tragedy of September 11th. Barcelona was born of the Hope of the Oslo Accords (on the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, Ed.). Both initiatives have different scope and financial resources but both initiatives share the same objectives: peace and stability through democracy, constant political adaptations and economic development.' The 'Common Vision and Work Programme that should emerge from the EuroMed Summit (at the end of November, Ed.) should help make Barcelona a better agent for change and reform, without distracting us from the central pursuit of brining peace and security to all corners of the Mediterranean.' Solana added: 'In Beirut, I met the Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and several of his ministers. We had a lengthen and useful meeting. I told him that Lebanon had the full support of the international community and notably European support. Resolutions passed in the United Nations over recent months have one objective and one ambition: to support the Lebanese people in its quest for independence, sovereignty and democracy. We don't have any other agenda. We don't have any hidden agenda. No Arab country is our enemy.' Solana then travelled to Jerusalem for the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin, saying: 'We all have a responsibility to help the two parties resume their talks and their contacts…. In this context, Arab countries have a major role to bring the process forward. King Abdallah's initiative could be revived.' On Iraq, Solana welcomed the Arab League initiative to organise a conference on national reconciliation, and the fact a preparatory meeting for such a conference will be held in Cairo shortly.
