14/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The third ministerial conference on road safety was held in Verona on 4 and 5 November, under the aegis of the Italian transport Minister Pietro Lunardi, and of the British Deputy Minister for transport Stephen Ladyman, on the subject "Lifelong learning for road safety". In their conclusions, the transport ministers of the EU, and also the candidate countries, the EEA and the EFTA, and representatives of the United States and Russia, wished to stress education and awareness for current and future generations of road users on the issue of road safety, in order to achieve the objective laid down by the 2001 White Paper on transport- to halve the number of victims of road traffic accidents by 2010. In order to do this, the protection of the most vulnerable road users was reaffirmed as a priority. These conclusions will be presented by Mr Lunardi to the Transport Council of 5 December.
