Commission wants to accentuate cooperation with third countries

Brussels/Luxembourg, 13/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Commission on 12 October adopted a communication on “A strategy on the external dimension of the area of freedom, security and justice, examining the challenges of this policy and the areas where cooperation with third countries seems necessary. “It is obvious that we will only succeed in creating an interior area of freedom, security and justice if we work in parallel on the security of our exterior environment”, said Franco Frattini. After the tragic events in Ceuta and Melilla (see other news), the Commissioner pointed out on Wednesday at the JHA Council that there is also a need for “a global approach” to sub-Saharan Africa. The communication underlines the need for increased cooperation with third countries using existing instruments, such as cooperation agreements, technical assistance, Europol, Eurojust and liaison officers. These instruments could be implemented in the near future for countries and regions such as the Mediterranean, the western Balkans, Russia, Ukraine and the USA, says the communication, which in particular recommends setting up a regular revision procedure for the methods of cooperation with third countries.
