Brussels, 13/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Because of the absence of border controls in the Schengen area and the gradual development of joint asylum and immigration policies, the Commission wants to formalise a reciprocal information procedure on national measures in this field with a potential impact on the other Member States. On 12 October, it adopted a proposed decision to establish a mechanism which will “strengthen confidence between Member States and facilitate, through reciprocal information, the adoption of coordinated approaches to resolve issues of mutual interest”, commented Franco Frattini, the Commissioner in charge of the dossier. The idea of establishing a reciprocal information procedure was viewed favourably at the JHA Council in April. Under this procedure, based on article 66 of the Treaty, the Member States must communicate to their counterparts and the Commission the measures which they intend to adopt on asylum and immigration, through a network managed by the Commission on the internet. The method is non-binding and should allow common problems which could be the subject of an exchange of views to be identified .
